MinnYak Elite Series Stop #5 Whitefish Chain of lakes
FULL REPORT
Did not have the opportunity to prefish for this event so I did some research on Omnia Fishing reports and decided that Rush lake was going to the lake I focused on. Turns out, I wasn't the only one!
There was a take off from the launch on Cross Lake and we all raced to Rush like a herd of turtles. I decided to fish docks on the way to Rush since i didnt have a spot or a plan.
Caught the first fish on topwater under the bridge in the connector channel from Cross to Rush...soon after I had 4 fish in just over an hour of fishing. Did a little exploring in some backwater bays that didn't have any kayaks in with no luck. Circled back to the channel and followed the east shoreline of Rush. Picked up my limit fish and another right after that on an outside weed edge flipping a swim jig. I worked around another angler that was on a spot and started hitting docks again. Pulled two fish from the first dock and continued working docks with some success but mostly smaller fish and pike...checked a deeper water spot that I had noted when looking at depth charts but that only produced pike as well.
The wind started to pick up so I wanted to continue working topwater so I headed to the north side of the island. Got one on the way there and this was around noon. When the standings were turned off, I was currently sitting 3rd place and didn't think it would holdout till the end.
Ended up catching a ton fish on the calm side and even culled one fish out. when I came out of the sheltered sided of the island the lake had changed. Rec boaters and wind everywhere.....I crossed the lake and worked weed edges and drops till I made it back to the landing on Cross Lake. Pulled one last fish from under the dock next to launch with 10 min left and called it a day.
To my surprise, I held onto that 3rd place slot with that afternoon cull and got to receive some hardware and a check! Hopefully enough points to make the AOY Championship
Thank you MinnYak and congrats to Zach Gibbons and Ryan Bonikowske!
Thank you Nate Juenke for letting me crash at your campsite and waking me up in the morning!
My Grey Duck Outdoor Allday Hybrid board was powered by ZPRO Lithium 50ah motor battery and 10ah for my accessories. All performed great and is a key factor in my success. When I don't have to paddle, my hands are free to fish....
Even though it was hot, I was kept cool and safe from the sun on my Trophy Armor, LLC Monster jersey.
Special thanks to Omnia Fishing for a quick delivery of fresh plastics and emergency swimjig order.
